Going Green at Work: Easy or Not?

Eco-friendly. Going green. Environmentally friendly. All phrases we have heard before but sometimes have a hard time physically implementing them. Here are a few practical tips to make your office space a little greener. They have helped us to reduce our office’s carbon footprint and hopefully they can do the same for you.

  1. Keep a list of what supplies you have on hand. Allow one person to be in charge of ordering office supplies so the chance of over ordering is minimal.
  2. Order recycled paper. While the movement toward a paperless office is steam rolling ahead, we still have printing needs. Choose paper that has a high number of recycled content and minimal chlorine bleaching to help reduce the number of trees cut down and waste water pollution.
  3. Offer employees the chance to telecommute if possible. Even if you allow employees to work from home a few days a month, you can help to reduce your office’s carbon footprint with less driving to and from work.
  4. Make use of natural light. When feasible, place desks near windows so employees can enjoy the sunshine. Don’t forget that natural light can also improve productivity. Make sure to turn off lights when a room is not in use.
  5. Purchase remanufactured ink and toner cartridges. You can lower costs as well as decrease greenhouse gases and air and water pollution.
  6. Order green office products. Environmentally friendly cleaning supplies are safer because they contain fewer toxins. Eco-friendly office products like refillable pens are great choices to cut down on waste.
  7. Place plants around your office. Plants help to clean the air around you and help to keep employees healthy. Also, they look welcoming and give a great personal touch to any office space.
  8. Turn off machines when not in use. Even if you put your computer in standby mode, you are still using energy. At the end of the day, make sure to turn everything off. An easy solution is plugging everything into a power strip so it’s one button to shut everything down for the night.
